The Importance of Contextualising Commercially Purchased Resources

marc

I recently spoke at the TAE10 Summit in Brisbane about the importance of contextualising commercially purchased resources. There are a plethora of resources in the marketplace and seemingly even more now with the endorsement of the new Training and Education Training Package.  However, it should be noted that these are only a starting point. Many of them profess to be an “everything to everyone”, one-size-fits-all resource. However, in the attempt to make the resources generic enough to suit a broad application, they may end up being a one size fits none! The key is to start with your target audience. Most of our audiences will require a bespoke option, rather than something off the off the rack. Don’t be afraid to modify, extend and blend your resources to ensure that they are best suited to the needs of your group. My advice is to buy as many of the commercial resources as possible to get a feel for what you like and what you don’t, what works and what won’t and then build your student resources around what you find.
